Clark & Enersen worked closely with the University of Nebraska Medical Center to design one of the most advanced experiential health care training facilities in the nation. The $121 million Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning features leading-edge technology to help students understand real-life healthcare conditions and patient care techniques. Spaces include a 3D and virtual immersive reality learning studio; an electronic learning media development studio designed to deliver learning content to remote locations; realistically-simulated clinical and community health care space with operable systems for experiential, individual, and team learning and assessment; and surgical skills simulation space. According to UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey Gold “it’s not just a building, it’s a transformation in the way we think about education.”

The shift in education and how people learn is visually represented in the architectural design. The Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning acts as a bold gateway landmark for UNMC’s campus, creating a strong new aesthetic while seamlessly fitting in to the established campus context. The building emerges from the side of a hill, with built-to-last materials of stone and brick supporting lighter elements of metal and glass. A sweeping metal and glass curve spirals outward from the main entry atrium, descending down the hill and culminating into a sharp edge that floats a full story above pedestrian level. This blade-like element announces the leading-edge program housed within and follows pedestrian movement up the hill to the entry atrium. Just beyond this curve is housed a series of collaborative rooms that are visually showcased and framed by the building form. In this way, the curved form acts as a lens, focusing the view on the hands-on learner, the state-of-the-art facility, and the conclusive paradigm shift in education and how people learn.
