University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Love Library North Landscape Improvements
Clark & Enersen was selected to make several landscape improvements outside of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Love Library North. The area is located at a major pedestrian crossroads that connects to the existing walkways through the Cather Garden, Donaldson Garden, and the major east/west route adjacent to Andrews Hall and Burnett Hall.
What was formerly a pass-through area was transformed into a campus destination with casual gathering spaces designed to encourage student interaction. The space integrates seamlessly with its surroundings, complements the character of the existing Cather and Donaldson gardens, and fits with the University’s campus master plan that emphasizes formal alignments of landscaping and paths.
The plaza design incorporates the existing east/west pedestrian route south of Andrews and Burnett Halls and further defines it with trees and other landscape features. There are also additional north/south routes that help to form the plaza. The existing berm and plant edges of the Donaldson and Cather gardens and added native stone edge treatment form the perimeter of the space.
Other highlights include:
- Variety of seating groups and types, including the native stone edge treatment.
- Trees throughout the plaza that provide additional shade.
- Lighting that extends the use of the plaza into the evening.
- Overall design that blends visually with interior of the library.
