University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Hamilton Hall Chemistry Laboratory Renovation
Clark & Enersen was selected to complete three phases of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s (UNL) Chemistry Department Hamilton Hall master plan, including extensive renovations of chemistry teaching laboratories and support space. The project emphasizes modernizing labs to support a wide range of innovative science pedagogy methods and designing spaces to improve student outcomes. With a tactical approach, teaching and research activities are able to continue during construction.
Renovated spaces include:
- Eight chemistry teaching labs on the 3rd floor (four organic chemistry, four general chemistry).
- Undergraduate instrumentation center.
- Satellite chemical stock room.
- Glass shop.
- Organic, inorganic, and analytical chemistry teaching labs on the 4th
These renovations are key to increasing Hamilton Hall’s capacity from 1,280 to 2,112 students per semester, a 65% increase over the previous design. The project also introduces furniture and fixtures that create bright, quiet, and comfortable spaces with natural light, resilient flooring, and collaborative work stations.
Other features include:
- Tall storage cabinets for containing weekly experiments.
- Maximized daylighting, and an automated light-dimming system.
- Reduced power usage.
- Variable air volume fume hoods, and improved ventilation and air quality.
