University of Kansas Medical Center, Orr-Major Building Gross Anatomy Renovation

University of Kansas Medical Center, Orr-Major Building Gross Anatomy Renovation

An initial study of the University of Kansas Medical Center’s (KUMC) Orr-Major Building focused on discovering ways to provide state-of-the-art teaching laboratory space for surgical skills and anatomy training. It found that the facility required consolidating surgical skills laboratories to encourage resource sharing; updating ventilation systems for student and professor safety; and converting the entire 4th floor into a space with capacity for larger learning groups.

The renovation included:

  • An open, state-of-the-art gross anatomy laboratory with 30 stations, each with an overhead exam light, camera, and large-screen monitor.
  • Prep room, cold room, and freezer storage.
  • Conference room.
  • Student break-out space for debriefing and decompressing.
  • New restrooms and locker rooms.

The project also includes a Surgical Skills space that will be constructed in a later phase as funds become available. The mechanical penthouse on the roof is designed to support future expansion.
