South Dakota State University and South Dakota Mines, POET Bioproducts Institute

Clark & Enersen was selected to design the new POET BioProducts Institute for South Dakota State University and the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. The cutting-edge bioprocessing pilot plant allows the schools, as well as the private industry partner POET, to collaborate and innovate on scaling up their research, which will include innovations related to the development of sustainable, agriculture-based biofuels and bioproducts.

Located on the South Dakota State Research Park, the 40,000-square-foot building’s 1st floor consists of a high-bay processing space and high-bay grinding space, as well as multiple small processing spaces that enable researchers to plug and play as need for each individual research project. Our team also provided a fabrication shop to develop the equipment needed for those projects, office space, and a reception lobby, also on the 1st floor. The 2nd floor features office and laboratory space, with each lab set up for maximum flexibility to accommodate a wide range of activities. Our team was able to manage the procurement and installation for all of the lab’s equipment to ensure this highly specialized facility was operating seamlessly prior to opening.

The facility is expected to produce more than $6 million annually from research expenditures that include employee salaries from grant-funded research. Estimates also include more than $4 million annually toward South Dakota industries accessing pre-pilot scale-up lab and bioprocessing services.
