Johnson County, Broadcast Meeting Room
The Johnson County Commissioners’ public meeting room is located inside the County’s Administration Building in Olathe, Kansas, and we designed improvements to convert the room into a TV broadcast facility so that county board meetings and other events could be livestreamed.
Converting the room into a broadcast facility presented several challenges. The room features an exterior, 10-foot-diameter arched window and a 20-foot-tall, barrel-vaulted ceiling with 10- and 12-foot-high perimeter ceilings. The existing dais location was to remain, and public seating for 60 people could not be compromised. The floor of the dais had to be raised 6 inches above the meeting room floor, and a new ADA-compliant ramp had to be incorporated.
To install new lighting to support broadcasting, a new lower ceiling vault was added with light sources at a specific height and distance from the dais. Acoustical panels limit reverberation. General lighting also was redesigned and natural light is controlled by motorized blackout draperies.
New interior finish materials—including ceilings, wall coverings, acoustical panels, paint, carpeting, drapery, wood finishes, and seating and upholstery—give the room a warmer, brighter appearance for broadcasting.
